Where the Buffalo Roam (1980)

Inspired by the twisted legend of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Directed by Art Linson.

Bill Murray stars in this film adaptation of some of the works of Hunter S. Thompson. The movie was better than I expected, but it can't stand up next to the genius of Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". As Michael pointed out last night, the problem with this film is that it's too soft. Even though it's rated R, it still feels like a kiddie version of Thompson's work. The problem is that both Bill Murray as Thompson and (especially) Peter Boyle as attorney Carl Lazlo are not nearly creepy or scary enough.

It's still an interesting look at some of Thompson's other work. We follow him in a few different times at his life, including at a Super Bowl and during the 1972 Presidential Campaign. This one in particular is interesting, as Thompson attempts to meet with President Nixon, played by a very convincing Nixon impersonator.

The film version also contains songs that are not included in the video release - the rights to some of the songs were only available for the theatrical release. Murray apparently spent so much time with Thompson and got so into the character, that when he returned from filming to Saturday Night Live, he had trouble shaking the character for a time.
