The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)
Prince Achmed is tricked into riding a magical horse by an evil sorceror. During his travels, he must team up with Aladdin and a fire witch to battle the sorceror and dark spirits for the love of a magical princess. Directed by Lotte Reiniger.
This is one of the earliest full-length animated films known to exist. It is animated using "silhouette" animation. The animation isn't drawn onto a frame like traditional animation, but instead cutouts are used (much like South Park). The film took Reiniger three years to complete, but it is a very unique and wonderful style.
It's based from stories from "The Arabian Nights", and details Prince Achmed, who is tricked by an evil sorceror who has designs on his sister. The magical horse he is tricked into riding can fly, but unfortunately Achmed doesn't know how to control it. After finally figuring it out, he lands in a magical land and falls in love with a magical princess. He takes her away, only to be foiled again by the sorceror and lose his love to the dark demons. He befriends the Fire Witch, the arch nemesis of the sorceror, and together they travel to the land of the dark demons.
Unfortunately, they need Aladdin's magic lamp in order to gain entry to the land, but Aladdin has lost his lamp to none other than the evil sorceror. After a battle between the sorceror and the witch, Achmed uses the lamp to battle the dark demons and save his love. Aladdin, Achmed and the princess return to Achmed's land, where Aladdin and Achmed's sister marry.
The colors used in the film were quite striking. Apart from the unusual animation style, they really made the the film a striking visual experience. And for a soundtrack, the group Dreamland Faces accompanied the movie. Their strange sound (acordian and saw) really helped with the mood and feeling of the film.
