The Mask of Zorro (1998)*

A new Zorro takes over for the older one. He still carves a mean "Z" though. Directed by Martin Campbell.

This fairly light but very entertaining take on Zorro imagines the original Zorro (Don Diego) being imprisoned just as the Spanish governor is forced out of the California territory and his baby daughter kidnapped. Twenty years later, Antonio Banderas watches as his outlaw brother is gunned down, and plots revenge, just as Hopkins (Don Diego) escapes from prison to revenge himself on the governor, now returned to California. Their plots intersect, and Hopkins takes it upon himself to train Banderas as a new Zorro, to foil the bad guys plans. Which apparently is to purchase California from General Santa Anna using his own gold (it's fairly unimportant).

Hopkins is reunited with his now totally smokin' daughter played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, who also becomes involved with Banderas. They beat the bad guys, Hopkins gives them his blessing, and a new Zorro legend begins anew. Light, fluffy, but entertaining.
