Day One (1989)*

A television movie about the creation of the atomic bomb in World War II. Directed by Joseph Sargent.

I remember watching this on TV with my father, and finding it pretty interesting. Seeing it now, many years later, it was fun to see many actors that I now recognize from other roles who appear in this film. Unfortunately the DVD release isn't very good quality - it looks like a TV movie from the 80s. I'm not sure if it's because of how it was shot, or if it was just a cheap transfer.

Although the movie takes some liberty with historical fact, it does try to hew pretty close to the historical record. Brian Dennehy as General Groves and David Strathairn as J. Robert Oppenheimer both shine as two men brought together under high pressure circumstances to complete the project. The movie does a bit of jumping around, and the plot suffers a bit, but it's still a very good look at the creation of the atomic bomb.
