Batman (1989)*

I'm BATMAN. Directed by Tim Burton.

The glorious rebirth of comic movies (that was almost destroyed by two sequels), this film helped reinvent the Batman mythos. The movie is completely (and wonderfully) stolen by Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Keaton's Batman appears to have arrived in a Joker based movie, but no one was complaining. Taking the series in a much different direction from the 1960s TV version, Burton created a new and striking Gotham for his characters to play in.

The idea of portraying the character as real, not as completely tongue-in-cheek, really helped to make the movie successful. Gotham was real, dirty and gritty, and obviously needed a character like Batman. The music by Elfman is fantastic, and has defined the Batman character for almost 20 years.
