They Live (1988)*
They control us! They are our masters! Wake up! They're all about you! All around you! Life's a bitch, and she's back in heat! Directed by John Carpenter.
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper stars in this Sci-Fi film about the greedy 80s. Apparently aliens have invaded and placed themselves and their supporters in places of power. By using mind control (espeically in TV) they keep the human population asleep and unknowing. But when Piper gets a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the world as it really is (including the aliens), he starts to raise hell.
It's a pretty daming indictment of consumerism and 80s greed. Piper's character is down on his luck, and just trying to get by, when he is thrown into the middle of the resistance. The story is perfect for film, as it relies so heavily on the visual representation of the "un-masking" of the aliens. Carpenter's own score also works well, a minimalist "blues" type theme. It goes well with the relatively sparse and rundown look of the film.
Perhaps the most famous part of the film is the extended fight sequence that takes place in a back alley. It's a long (almost 10 minutes!) fight, but almost comic book-like in its effects.
