Sonorous Shorts
STREET OF CROCODILES (1986)
Directed by the Brothers Quay. Absolutely unbelievable animation techniques. An early Quay production, they manage to make you uncomfortable and yet completely drawn into the world.
REHEARSALS FOR EXTINCT ANATOMIES (1987)
Directed by the Brothers Quay. Another eery yet beautiful masterpiece from the Brothers. Watching the string and stripes interact with their surroundings, along with the music, is truly a mesmorizing experience.
STRAIGHT AND NARROW (1970)
Directed by Tony Conrad. An interesting (although eye-straining) experience, music plays as shapes and (seemingly) colors flash by on screen. More interesting as an optical illusion, I found my own eyes beginning to hurt at the halfway point.
BRIDGES GO ROUND (1958)
Directed by Shirley Clarke. Footage of bridges, the interesting shapes that they may create, together with two (!) different jazz inspired soundtracks.
OUR TRIP TO AFRICA (1966)
Directed by Peter Kubelka. Peter Kubelka was an experimental film-maker hired by a group of Europeans to do a video travelog of their trip to Africa. What he presented probably suprised them, as they are not seen in a positive light, and the entire thing lacks any real narrative plot. But it is an interesting view of these Europeans on holiday, shooting and enjoying themselves contrasted with the conditions which they are visiting.
MONEY (1985)
Directed by Henry Hill. Reagan-era NYC, with the sound and pictures not necessarily synced up, but an attempt at exploring some of the ideals of the 80s.
